Thankfully, the burst of light wasn't enough to startle her. Alice met him with a dead-eye stare that said it all: "really?". ]
As if I'm going to be startled by your childish antics.
[ Alice snapped at him. She moved quickly, easily thrusting her small, slender arms to unhook him from the hedge, and-
Promptly following that with a kick. It was more than just the hedge, Alice still had a bone to pick with him. ]
How unfortunate, you have nothing to jump from, isn't it, Sion?

In one fell swoop, Alice has both freed him (his hair disentangled from the hedge with such aggressive skill and alacrity that the Director is left starstruck in his savior's wake...!) and introduced her heel to his shin, kicking him with no measure of remorse, nor the slightest measure of hesitance (how scary...).
Almost, he forgets to flinch, aware that such a sound impact (even from so very slight a girl) should still hurt, at least to an extent. And so: his wince is delayed, the reaction time slow enough to be considered as odd, but when one has been robbed of all sensation save for an ever-present thrum of pain throughout the body...
What more might be expected of him, the good Director who, in his embarrassment, cants his head to the side, smiling still, his hands carding though the long fall of his hair to smooth out the strands before...!
Something occurs to him— ]
Ah? So you are familiar with programmable matter and its various applications, Miss Liddell?
[ He wouldn't have thought! Though the technology is not, precisely, new it is rare enough to be evocative of surprise (and more than that, distrust), and so--...
Sion is relieved, as the little sphere of light hovers into the air overhead, twinkling brightly in the onset of the dark.
And as for that second comment--...
Haven't they already been through it once before? ]

[ Once he's free from the hedges, Alice walks around him to face him. She doesn't even notice the fact he doesn't seem to flinch from her kick. As if Alice flinches herself from pain to think anything else is unusual. ]
I'm not familiar with it, I'm just glad that it's not fire.
[ But even if he's up and moving, Alice approaches, quite unlike her usual demeanor to stay further away from Sion. How can he still be smiling after that? His smile is only met with more agitation on Alice's part, meeting his smile with a grimace. But a moment after those words leave her mouth, she regrets it.
They have, indeed, been through it before. Sion was fortunate to not be face to face with her. She looks up at him with her arms crossed, like how a scolding mother would look to their child.
Not before long Alice moves in with another shin kick. ]
You owe us an apology.

In many ways, Alice is an heiress on the cusp of flourishing into her own, learning to give voice to her opinions and find courage enough to confront the unknown, and yet--... there is something still so remarkably childish about the way she moves in, again, for a second kick, and this time Sion bothers not to feign a flinch. ]
Then...
[ I'm just glad that it's not fire.
Even if her demeanor has by far changed, Alice is still afraid, isn't she? ]
...I am sorry I gave you reason to be worried for me.
[ The flat of his hand, pressed to his heart, coupled with a slight bow of head. ]
And I regret that I was not able to be there for Gwen when she woke, though... I do know that I left her in the care of someone far more knowing, and far more reliable than myself.

[ Alice immediately interjects Sion. Which is a lie, of course. She couldn't admit to such a thing to his face. It felt as if she would be encouraging his childish antics, giving him too many inches. She doesn't kick him for the third time, instead, she circles around him and creates the usual distance between herself and him. ]
The little one didn't understand where you went.
[ And neither did Alice, who had to awkwardly explain that maybe, perhaps, he had other matters. ]
Do you not remember how she clung to you? That leaves an impression on a child, especially after losing her family.
[ It's why she finds herself comfortable with Jack, compared to anyone else that knew of the crime that took place at the Liddell residence those ten years ago. ]
It doesn't matter, it's still rude that you left like that and I will be upset with you for quite some time.

[ Like a hawk, she circles him, and to (politely) draw attention to the fact, the little orb of light (programmable matter which glows brightly still, manipulated not by an catalyst, mechanism, or tool, but simply by Sion's will) follows along behind her as she paces (in a series of whimsy loops and aerial curls, thoroughly given to displays of acrobatics!). Almost, it is like something from a children's fairytale: a fae-creature companion to light the way in the dark, or a protector to guard her in the night. ]
I do know quite the story or two to tell as the hour draws late, and it becomes the time for tales of far-off places, daring swordfights, magic spells, and Kings in disguise...!
[ Surely something a child might enjoy, and perhaps even Alice herself who seemed wont to daydream and to turn her eyes toward a world which only she might be able to see. ]
My elder siblings shared them with me, when I was young. [ A good memory, if not a bittersweet one. Parted, again, after being newly reunited, his brother had been transferred to a remote outpost at the edge of the Quad, and his sister presumed missing (Sion dares not to think worse), vanished after the riots. But both... both would want him to stand here in the present, in attendance at the summit to give voice to all the ideas they could not. ] Oftentimes, they quelled my tears with such fleeting fancies and enchanting tales.
For you and for Gwen, I would attempt to do their retellings justice.

[ Alice continued to walk, suddenly determined to ignore Sion and his light. Her arms firmly crossed, she started to wander through the hedges. As Alice walked, she started to go even further ahead of Sion, her dress swaying as she walked. ]
Should I? Or shall I find you on the lawn in the morning thereafter?
[ For Gwen's sake, she would. Alice lived alone and the only social interactions she had were with her lawyer, which were starting to dissolve into shouting matches between them. That was never good for a little girl so shell shocked from the epidemic and loss of her parents. Sion, at least, was bright, whereas Alice was sullen and quiet. Even now, the little girl reminded her of herself and her own loss, which brought back her own terrible memories.
But swordfights and magic...
In the evenings to get Gwen to sleep, in which Alice allows Gwen to crawl up on her lap and to hold her, despite her discomfort, Alice tells her stories of her own world. Tales about the White King and Queen of Hearts. Or stories of the gryphon and mock turtle, good stories about Wonderland before it came tainted from her madness. She would follow with drawings for Gwen, filling her head with those nonsensical, happy images. She even learned "How Doth the Little Crocodile" from Alice among other rhymes.
But this? This would actually make Alice agree with Sion. ]
Ah.
[ The horror. ]
You may if you think it helps. It would help her to hear more from you, so she knows you're not ill.

[ —he asks after her, equal parts pleased and bemused to have heard the young heiress agree (not willfully contest or put up contrary airs) with him. And as he falls into step with her, allowing for a respectful distance to remain between them as they traverse the pathways between the hedge, he is glad all is just as he suspected: Alice, herself, must know of the faith to be found in stories.
(And that, perhaps, by telling her own, she might be able to grant others strength someday soon.) ]
What may I do to aid you, Miss Liddel? [ After he has given their adoptive ward reason to worry for him no longer, there is still the matter of her caretaker: Alice, who would rather wander ahead of him than stand idle and converse. Perhaps she is anxious, fraught with energy despite how clearly weary she is, and that is why she's neglected to take dinner with the rest of the representatives, choosing to take refuge in the gardens. ]
Surely, I've a favor to repay, now that you've freed me.
[ A pause, a thoughtful hum as he lifts a hand to his cheek, following the thin line of one of his 'battle-wounds'. Before resuming delegation tomorrow, he really would have to clean up, wouldn't he...? Perhaps there's a salve of some-such in the suite... ]
Or, at least, you'll allow me to properly say 'thank you'?
