rin gets adopted the thread
It's not entirely his fault, half of the blame can be pushed to a pair of loose lips speaking of a monastery somewhere in the mountains. Now anyone who had just arrived on an entirely different planet that they're completely foreign to wouldn't risk the possibility of getting lost, but he was already taking risks by leaving his mansion on Qresh. Abandoning his initial mission of finding some woman bearing a child who, in all honesty, meant nothing to him was as easy as waving his hand.
So he establishes a way there despite gaining information about the monks policies.
But give Crowley a foot and he'll quite literally take the mile, which is exactly what he does when Rin comes into the picture. ]
I'm really lucky to have found you. [ Said with a pleasant smile. ] Any longer on my own and I probably would have gotten lost.
youre my dad boogie woogie woogie
S'okay, it's really no big deal. [ He gives the strange man an awkwardly polite smile, leading them both up a winding path carved into the earth. Rin had been on his way home from work when he came across Crowley. ] Didn't ya like...bring a map or anything? I haven't seen you around before, so you must not be from around here.
[ Which means it's a bad idea to wander off into the mountains on a whim. ]
no subject
The overall scenery isn't what he was expecting, or at least what he ever imagined, the Monastery to be. The life that grows around it and the winding paths they must take to arrive there served as an obstacle at worst and that's how Crowley managed to get lost, but at least it remains aesthetically pleasing enough. It's different when compared to Qresh, and he hopes to never become familiar to it.
Too bad. ]
No, I was just to excited to finally get here that I didn't bother.
[ He's pretty dumb... but he had enough blood on him to keep him from starving. ]
I'm not. Nor am I even from Leith, I'm from Qresh.
no subject
[ Isn't that where... the Nine live...? But why would someone from the Nine come all the way here to Leith? To the Monastery no less? It makes Rin curious but not enough to voice it, nor to feel any real concern for the issue. It's definitely not like him to suspect someone he literally just met. He just focuses on the ground in front of him and the image of the Monastery coming up above the horizon, his tail swishing a bit at the familiar comforting feeling of home washing over him. ]
What's got ya so excited to come up here, then? You know one of the monks or something?
no subject
Understandable, not many people there want to leave for their own reasons. [ Snobbish reasons, or simply because they have no desire of adventure, honestly the reasons for each and every individual inhabiting Qresh all differ so he couldn't speak for them all. Only for himself. And, for now and always, that was all that would matter.
He takes note of the tail, it still being odd despite Crowley being an oddity himself, before he decides to shrug off his own set of questions. ]
Yeah, real good friends with an uncle. I heard he might be here so I decided to come visit.
no subject
All he does to affirm his listening is hum, not caring too much about whatever the people on Qresh felt like. It doesn't really directly affect him in any way, and he's the type to just focus on what's on his plate. Which, for the last few years, has just been building his life here on Leith with the Monastery. Not. Involving Qresh or the Nine or whatever else. And by the way, he too took note of Crowley's pointed ears, but like the other, decided to not raise question. He'd taken to hiding his tail in earlier years, but with features like his, it's pretty obvious regardless of how he tried to present himself. Maybe Crowley was similar? ]
Really?! Who? I know pretty much everyone up here, growin' up here and all. I don't remember any Uncle sayin' anything about ya. [ While normally this kind of statement would be laced with some kind of suspicion, the only tone that comes off of Rin's speech is curiosity. ] What'd ya say your name was again? Toweley?
no subject
Crowley. [ He repeats. For probably the third time this trip, let's be honest, but he remained patient and taking no offense over the fact that this child couldn't remember his name. Sure enough he'll forget his in a few weeks if he manages to complete his business here successfully. ] Crow-ley.
[ He laughs softly. ] You're funny. Since you've been living in the mountains this whole time, you've never had any proper tutoring right?
[ Not like schooling helped any with a person's memory... but it's enough to change the topic. ]
no subject
[ This time he's gonna remember for sure. ]
And, uh, not really? There ain't really any point, since I just live here and stuff... [ And he wasn't ever manufactured genetically for school anyway!! To be honest, he was built for war, not gardening and picking up trash and bagging groceries. But that's another story. He learned enough about how to read from the monks and their teachings, he didn't have any interest in learning much else. ] I don't need to know a ton of school type stuff to get on with my life here.
[ He shrugs. The ground they're walking on becomes a bit more steep as they begin to scale up the cliff side, both sides of the Monastery mirroring each other. Under the assumption that Crowley has an invitation to be here, he just continues to lead the way, hand idly picking at the strap slung around his shoulder. ]
Anyway, the Monastery's pretty big, so I'll help ya out in looking for your friend. Once we get up there, we can check living quarters first.
[ Which means this lie will catch up to you sooner or later. ]
no subject
Makes sense, it wouldn't be a bad idea to invest in something like that though.
[ Because who actually knows if this Scarback in particular is of importance to Rin. An uncle who took care of him, someone to keep him on the right path--or perhaps put him on this path, because he seemed relatively young to be doing any sort of the suspension or usual practices the Scarbacks recreated on Qresh.
But if that's true he probably would have tagged along... but who knows. It's been four years, Crowley can only remember the person who changed his life from his face. ] It's just good to know that sort of stuff. At least the Quad's history, if nothing else.
[ And maybe math... ]
Aren't you a helpful soul? I'll have to give you something as thanks.
no subject
[ Maybe he sounds ignorant for being indifferent about the history of the Quad but really? In the bigger picture, how is knowing about those things going to aid him in any way. All he knows is that the Company is terrible, there's a lot of poverty and pain around the Quad, and he is grateful to live in as safe a place as the Monastery. It's not like he wants to be a history teacher or something, so the how and why doesn't really matter to him. Plus, he can barely read. ]
And don't even mention it. It's just Scarback hospitality - plus, ya got lost finding your way here, so you're bound to get lost again if I'm not around. Don't worry, I'll keep you safe~
[ He's tuts, glancing back at the other with a playfully mother-hennish look while hopping up to the next ledge. ]
no subject
[ Does he realize that he's the one being kindly assisted and escorted when he could have easily starved in the mountains? Yes. But Crowley having any sort of a filter when he's lived for twenty-nine years and is honestly here with a goal set to kill someone... well, you obviously know where his priorities lie. And it's not to impress some kid with a tail, pointed ears, and fangs. ]
...
[ That look pisses him off just slightly. ]
I could beat you in a fight, y'know?
no subject
[ He huffs, stopping their little trek to point at the other in a very, very, very childish way. It's not that he's insecure about his inability to read or lack of schooling but he hates the condescending attitude that comes with a lot of the people that have come from more fortunate places than he. ]
And I'm tougher than I look!! Ya live on Qresh don't ya? What do you fight over out there? Who gets the last sandwich at the tea party?
no subject
[ There's no arguing against it? Kids who don't their history aren't the sharpest tools in the shed, in Crowley's perspective, considering it's a subject that's not especially difficult to grasp. ] You just have to sit down and read. Unless you can't do that.
[ And listen if anyone bothered asking if he could trade lives with someone else and had grown up poor he'd shrug and say 'sure'. ]
Most Qreshi are like that, yeah. They especially like poisoning the food there too, apparently. [ Just Facts. ] But I took up swordsmanship when I was younger and only came across one person in the entire Quad that really gets my blood pumping.
no subject
It won't make a difference either way. [ Rin is quite stubborn when it comes to straying from his own desires, so it'd have to take more than that to get him to go out of his way of his daily life to study. He'll just change the subject!! ] I don't believe you. If yer that good at fighting how come ya did something so reckless as go off in the mountains by yourself?
[ Not very smart if you ask him!! Who's really the stupid one here. ]
I might not have book smarts, but at least I'm not enough of a dumbass to do that.
no subject
My sense of direction has nothing to do with my strength.
[ Almost said as a pout, but not quite. ]
Do you wanna fight?
no subject
Tch...No. Why would I wanna fight? [ He gives a short glance towards the other. ] There's no point. Plus, we're close to home now anyway.
[ And everyone who lives at the Monastery would know that Rin has destroyed things there, intentionally or unintentionally, over the course of his stay. There's no way that now that he's actually grateful for living there that he's going to bring trouble there on purpose. Besides, he's pretty against using his genetic mutations against other people, it makes him feel like he's just playing into what he was created for. Even if supposedly Crowley could beat up anyone in the Quad, Rin wouldn't want to risk it. Can't everyone just get along!! ]
no subject
[ Like lowkey calling him a dumbass. Who wouldn't think that someone would want to fight after that? Even though he was doing the exact same thing?? (In his defense he was just being direct and honest, obviously something the monks have been avoiding to keep Rin... uneducated.)
At least he can read, do math, and score higher than a 68 unlike some people here. ]
Ha, that was fast.
no subject
[ Slowly, he lets the last of his momentary aggravation fizzle out of his demeanor - he'll play nice again because he's 5 and gets over things quickly if they're small. ] It ain't exactly hard to get to the Monastery if ya know what yer doing - it's freakin' huge. [ Which means that even though it didn't take long to get to the base, it would take ages to walk around the entire thing. And luckily for both of them, they saved time since Mr. I Have No Sense of Direction had made some progress on getting there before Rin came across him. ] I go up and down the mountain pretty often, so I know all the fastest ways.
[ He keeps his hand on the side of the cliff while they scale the consecutive ledges to the Monastery's base. ]
This is the easiest way up. Since the ledges are all even 'n stuff.
no subject
It's my first time coming up.
[ So cut him slack. He's an old man and very tired okay.
But more importantly he has a question that has been sitting idly on his tongue, questioning how he should word it before he decides to just go with what is easiest: ] This friend of mine isn't the type to come out in the sun, either, so that's why I couldn't be guided here by him. He's a real lazy guy, don't think? [ Very subtly trying to see if whether or not Rin was even familiar with the Scarback he's after. ]
no subject
Uh, yeah, I guess there's a few people like that up here. Some Uncles just like staying at the Monastery and stuff. [ That didn't necessarily mean they were lazy!!! ] They've got lot to do with all their worship.
Yer gonna have to be a bit more specific.
no subject
[ Or catch on fire, as Crowley has had the misfortune to learn. The only reason he's able to walk freely today was because of the band around his arm, but even with that he needed to cover a majority of his body to keep himself from feeling sluggish...
In fact, why did he have this? Where did it come from? It wasn't created for him specifically after the reveal of his illness... it was always there, always with him. Always. ]
He-- [ His head throbs, which causes him to hiss in pain and abruptly stop in his tracks as a hand comes to his forehead. His brows furrow, irritation and pain evident as his body leans forward, feeling as if someone was pressing down on his shoulders and wanting to force him to his knees.
He isn't hungry, he made sure to drink before coming here, and the pain wasn't similar to when he was starving...
Ultimately Crowley doesn't even realize that his nose is also bleeding until red falls and peppers the Earth below his feet. ] Shit.
[ what?? the fuck is going on. ]
no subject
Oh, shit, are ya okay? [ Rin is immediate to scramble back for the other, looking ready to catch him if he was about to faint. Crowley is an old, frail man in comparison to Rin's young and healthy stature. ] I forget some people ain't used to the altitude up here. [ Which is what he assumes must be the cause of the nosebleed and headache. ] We should take a break so ya don't pass out or anything!!
no subject
Yeah.
[ He lied. His head throbs, vision blurred as the floor looks marbled and worn instead of soft Earth. Something is thrown to his feet but when he blinks it's no longer there, and slowly the world and its reality slowly comes back together. ] We don't need to take a break. [ Bringing the back of his hand to his face he rubs it against his nose, blood dirtying his glove. ]
... Gross.
no subject
[ He makes a face at the blood coming from the other's face, not exactly buying that he was A-OK to continue scaling the mountain. If he had had anything on him that would be useful to wipe his nose with, he would've given it to him, but alas. ]
I don't wanna have to carry ya the rest of the way if ya faint. 'S not like we're in a rush.
no subject
Not to say that he's off them, because he's certainly making the effort to go on. ]
Nah, I gotta hurry up.
no subject
[ But Rin won't continue to argue if the other truly wants to go on. Just don't come crying to him if you feel bad later. ]
Coming here ain't a walk in the park. [ He kicks a rock aside and checks over his shoulder one last time before beginning to walk again. ] If yer so rushed to get to the Monastery, why didn't ya come up with a good plan to get up here? Doesn't make a whole lotta sense.
no subject
[ There's not a hint of irritation in his voice, continuing to rub at his face with his hand until he can no longer smell the strong tang of blood in his nose. But even if there's only remnants it clings to him like soggy clothes; another reminder that he's far from human yet close to the person who made him this way. ]
I don't wanna hear what does and doesn't make sense from someone who's never had any proper tutoring.
